Which Cordless Drill?

Why Cordless?

Keyless Chuck

Charge it up and take it anywhere. With a cordless drill, you can work anywhere. Cordless is easier to use in confined spaces and especially useful in the garden if you have no access to a powerpoint. Working outside in the rain, it's way more preferable to having a mains voltage extension cord under your feet.

Keyless Chuck

Most cordless drills nowadays feature a 'keyless chuck'. This allows an easy change of drill bits with no tools required.

Drill Speed

Drill Speed is measured in rotations per minute (rpm). With a variable speed cordless drill you also have a powerful cordless screwdriver in your toolset. Start driving slowly and then speed up once the screw 'bites'. Switch into reverse to loosen stubborn woodscrews - much easier on the arm than a normal screwdriver.

Hammer Action

With a hammer action drill, the chuck moves backwards and forwards as it spins - hammering as it drills. This makes drilling into brickwork and masonry easier.

Voltage

The higher the voltage the more power you have at your disposal. A high voltage drill will also require a larger battery that in turn will make the drill larger and heavier. If you intend to do mostly masonry drilling then buy the highest powered drill that you can sensibly afford. Cordless drill voltages commonly range between 12-24 volts.Typically, a 12v or 14.4v drill will be fine for occasional use while an 18v or 24v drill would be better for a professional tradesman.

Battery Type

Typically, at the moment, most cordless drills are sold with NiCad or NiMH rechargeable batteries. The latest generation of batteries being used in some cordless power tools are the Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. These are lighter, run longer and maintain their charge much more effectively than previous rechargeable batteries.

Charge Times

Battery charge times vary from model to model. Some drill/charger combinations feature 'fast charge' settings. If your drill is intended for sustained use, get a spare battery. Keep one on charge while using the other.

Heat Gun Nozzle Makita Drill Bits

What Makes the Best Cordless Drill?

There are several different vectors on which to evaluate cordless drills. This is one of the reasons why it is difficult to decide which drill is the best cordless drill. Let's start with the most basic thing:

Keyless Chuck

Build Quality

Keyless Chuck

By "build quality" I mean whether the components of the drill hold up well over time and use. If the drill doesn't have a quality electric motor it may "burn up" when you use it for an extended period. Likewise the clutch, which allows the drill to provide varying levels of torque, may start to slip or just break completely. There are also some switches on a drill and you don't want these to wear out.

You may be able to determine the build quality of a drill (to some degree) by holding it in your hands. Things that "look cheap" usually are. But I believe the best way to determine the build quality is to read through several reviews online. Build quality is something that reveals itself over time and because of the Internet you can leverage other people's experience. The second factor in finding the best cordless drill is the:

Battery

Generally the battery accounts for a significant amount of the weight of a cordless drill. The newest battery technology is the lithium-ion battery. They store the most charge in the least amount of weight and so can contribute to a lighter drill or a drill that runs longer. The other technologies are NiMH (nickel metal hydride) or NiCd (nickel cadmium).

One thing you need to know about NiMH batteries are that they lose their charge over time when not in use. You can expect them to lose about 30% in a month. Neither NiCd nor lithium-ion batteries have this problem. But if you don't plan on leaving your drill on the shelf for weeks and then using it without charging it, this shouldn't be a problem. Other than self-discharge, NiMH batteries are ideal for cordless drills due to their low internal resistance. Lithium-ion is better in the weight to power category, which is important, but they are also more expensive, so you'll have to decide whether the extra power or missing weight is worth the cost. The last aspect I will address is:

Features

The best cordless drill will have to have at least the features we've come to expect, but not all of the "bells and whistles," especially if you don't need them. We've all come to expect a keyless chuck, which allows you to change bits with only your hands, without an extra tool. The best cordless drill needs to have a keyless chuck and one that works well, not allowing the bit to slip.

One nice feature is a clutch. A clutch allows you to set a maximum torque for your drill so you don't over-tighten screws and strip them. We expect most drills to have a clutch. Another nice feature is having more than one speed. This allows you to use the drill with either high speed and low torque or less speed and higher torque, which makes the drill more versatile.

Another nice thing we've started seeing in some newer drills is a built-in LED light. This comes in quite handy when you're working in low light. But it's not a must have. You'll also see a lot of cordless drill kits with two batteries. If you use the drill for more than just casual use, you'll want two batteries so you can keep working while the other battery is charging.

Who Invented the Car and the Need For Car Insurance?

Who invented the car is a simple enough question, but the answer is far more complicated as there was no 'eureka' moment, but rather a gradual evolution of automobile milestones.

Keyless Chuck

Dependent upon how liberally you apply the definition of automobile, which literally means 'self-moving', designs for such a vehicle can be traced to as far back to the 15th Century and drawings made by a true visionary - Leonardo Da Vinci. However, when it comes to a working self-propelled car, then Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot may well claim the title of original inventor. In 1769 he produced a fully functional road vehicle, or military tractor, built specifically for the French Army which recorded a top speed of 2.5 M.P.H. and was powered by steam.

Keyless Chuck

But, the car as we know it, propelled by an internal combustion petrol engine, was first successfully road-tested and patented by Karl Freidrich Benz in Germany in 1886. The three-wheel vehicle was propelled by a four-cycle internal combustion engine and in the same year another famous name associated with motoring and fellow German, Gottlieb Wilhelm Daimler, along with his partner Wilhelm Maybach also produced an automobile but complete with the world's first four-stroke engine. The first Briton to build a motor car was a plumber and gas fitter by the name of Fred Bremer, who at the tender age of 20 in 1892 started construction of his four-wheeled, petrol driven car, which he first drove on the open road two years later.

But it was brothers Frank and Charles Duryea, who became the first American car manufacturers in 1893 and indeed it was also in the USA that mass production became the standard for car manufacture. In 1901 Ransome Eli Olds introduced the basic assembly line in Detroit and became the largest manufacturer of cars. By 1913 however, Henry Ford had developed an assembly plant in Highland Park, Michigan that included a conveyor belt which drastically reduced production times; a Model T took 93 minutes to build from start to finish, and as a result his company became the world's largest manufacturer. By 1927 over 15million Model T's had been built at the plant.

Once Ford's assembly techniques were exported throughout the world the car soon became the most popular method of transport. During the late 20th century cars became widely affordable and the most convenient way to travel. However, its popularity also led to a necessary introduction of various laws to protect both drivers and pedestrians, and the inevitable introduction of taxes to help swell the chancellor's coffers. Major UK motoring legislation milestones include:

Driving licences became compulsory in Jan 1904 Petrol first taxed, at 3d per gallon, in 1908 Tax discs become compulsory under the Roads and Finance Act 1920 First automatic traffic lights turned on in Wolverhampton in 1928 Car insurance cover legally required for all drivers under the Road Traffic Act 1930 Driving tests become compulsory June 1935

There's no doubt the concept of the automotive has changed dramatically from it's early days, but still it shows no sign of stopping with manufacturers ploughing millions of pounds each year into researching new models, methods of fuel and passenger safety; all a far cry from it's pipe-dream beginnings on a piece of paper!

Shopping For A Woodworking Drill Press? Read This First!

At the risk of stating the obvious, I'd like to point out that the purpose of a drill press is to drill consistently straight holes accurately into wood, metal or plastic. The purpose of a drill press with a fence is to drill repetitive holes in a work piece at a consistent distance from the edge of a work piece. The purpose of a drill press with a fence and one (or two) stops is to drill holes at a consistent distance from one or both ends of a work piece or work pieces. The purpose of a drill press with a tilting table is to drill accurate and repeatable holes at an exact angle into the work piece. The purpose of an electric drill is to drill holes only where using a drill press would be impossible or impractical.

Keyless Chuck

There are many things to consider when comparing drill presses such as motor size, table size and features, quill stroke, task lighting, laser availability, rotation speeds, ease of speed change, number of speeds, reversible feed handle (for lefties) and even the size of the base (for machine stability).

Keyless Chuck

With regard to motor size, experience tells me that 3/4 horsepower is about the smallest size motor I'd like to see on a drill press. Some models try to get away with a 1/2 horsepower motor. There are times, especially at higher belt speed ratios that a half horsepower motor will prove to be inadequate.

I recently completed a side-by-side comparison review of 3 drill presses from three different manufacturers. The Powermatic 2800 PM was, by far, the most expensive I reviewed. The other 2 drill presses I considered are competitive with each other and list for about half the price of the Powermatic. I am discussing the 2800 PM as an example of what a drill press could be if money were no object. The other drill presses I reviewed were both very capable machines and would definitely do the job in an average woodworking shop.

The thing about the Powermatic is that it is just plain neat! It has all the bells and whistles a designer could dream up. The person who designed this thing clearly knows a lot about drill presses and woodworking from personal experience. If money were no object it would be the drill press I would buy. A guy can dream, can't he?

Like any Powermatic machine, this drill press has top quality, smooth operation and features to die for. It also has a somewhat hefty price tag when compared to other similar machines. That said, let's take a look at what you get for your money so you can decide if it's worth making the jump.

This drill press features twin LED lights, mounted in the head that do not cast shadows, head-mounted twin lasers that pinpoint the drill point, a 16" x 14" table with twin T-slots that expands to 16" x 26" when needed to support large work pieces. The table tilts left or right 90 degrees with a positive stop at zero degrees. A large handle makes raising or lowering the table easy. An additional, unique feature that is included in the price of this machine is an adjustable split fence with a dust collection port. A fence is essential to production work so plan on buying or making one if you don't buy this machine.

Speeds are easily changed from 400 to 3000 RPM with a handle on the upper left side of the head, meaning that you do not need to concern yourself with belt and pulley access. And, you can tell how fast or slow the machine is running by looking at a digital speed indicator right on the front of the head. Also in the front of the head is a lighted on/off switch with a key.

Powermatic gives you a full horsepower of motor power which insures that this machine can handle everything that is presented to it. The motor is single-phase and can be run on either 115 or 230 volts AC. It is pre-wired for 115 volts.

The 5/8" chuck is keyless, the depth stop is quick-setting and the feed handles can be mounted on the left or the right for ease of operation no matter which handle you like to use. Spindle travel is 4 3/8" for deep drilling capacity. For drilling into assembled projects, the maximum chuck to table distance is 30" and the maximum chuck to floor distance is 46". The column diameter is 3 1/8", the base measures 11 7/8" x 19 5/8". The drill press weighs in at 287 lbs, and ships at 302 lbs.

As much as I like this machine, in this economy, I might be wise to settle for a good machine from, say, Delta or Jet. At least I know what the possibilities are before I wake up and stop dreaming!

Where Can I Drive My Go Kart? Seems Illegal in Most Places

Most people get glassy eyed when they see a go kart (people who love go karts that is) and tend to forget about where in the world they are going to drive their go-cart.

Keyless Chuck

Sometimes the images in your mind go to race tracks and passing Ferraris, but "Really now! Are you going to be driving this thing on a race track?"

Keyless Chuck

I recieved this email from a reader about go karts (and sadly it is a common question)

Hi, I got stopped by a police officer for operating my go kart on the the sidewalk, and he said I could be charged with: Operating a vehicle without being licensed, driving to endanger, driving a non-certified vehicle, and told me I had to be over 18 to operate any gas powered anything. I understand now that I can't drive a go kart anywhere pretty much but where should I go?

Because the question "Where Am I Going To Ride This Go Kart?" was not asked at the outset, now you have a very depressed individual, considering getting rid of the gokart all together.

One issue is about "Where" the other about "Age."

I am not legal authority, but I can tell you some basics: Un=Liscensed motorized vehicles cannot drive on roads.

About the age, that varies from state to state.

You need to look into your state statutes and codes to get verification on legal data. Consult a local attorney for that informaton...

But that aside, it is a good idea to know where you will be driving this go kart.

In your driveway?

On your uncles farm?

(Obviously not on the street because that is against the law)

In cornfields?

In your yard?

Do you have a big enough yard to ride a go kart?

Are their laws against go karts in your neighborhood?

Have you permission to ride it in the parking lot across the street?

Riding a go kart involve more than just you on a gokart.

It affects people around you in the following ways:

- A go kart is a driving projectile.
- A "unknown talent" is setting its course.
- The coarse is not set, but can change from moment to moment.

In short a go kart coupled with a driver is like running with the bulls in Spain.

Those around the go kart have no clue as to whether it is going to strike them or not.

So before you get upset that you cannot drive it "anywhere" realize that people around you have to take on a burden. A burden of concern and care. Will they, or you get hurt?

There are Legalities

Additionally, the Go Kart is not legal on the roads for various reasons, primarily because of its low profile (people can't see you) and its lack of many other essential road handling and accident preventitive components.

This set of questions is probably the most difficult to acknowledge, because there are so many obstacles. And I don't mean trees and cars, I mean regulations about motor vehicles. You cannot just blast down the road with your go kart. Sounds like a fun idea, but in reality it is dangerous and against the law.

If you end up buying this go kart, or even making it, you may end up with a very depressing set of conclusions:

I can't ride it anywhere!

And even if I could, I can't put it in the car to get it where I want to ride (its too big)!

So ask the question first. Get an answer.

The answer maybe as simple as networking with some people to find a place to ride: ie your uncles farm! (but there is even more than just your uncle at stake there too...remember there are 10 questions, not six)

There are various go karting clubs out there and you can join them. You do not have to be a go kart racer to join these clubs, it is just place where you can enjoy the go kart. Be sure to get in contact with them in your area before investing in the go kart and all that goes with it (ie helmuts, gloves, suits, etc..)

Used Car Price Negotiation

You've decided to purchase a used vehicle and want to get the best deal possible. This is a goal that all car buyers have. Unfortunately, most buyers aren't able to achieve the goal. That's because they don't know what strategies work when it comes to car price negotiation.

Keyless Chuck

Let's get something straight: car price negotiation does not have to be as painful and as tedious as some people would lead to believe. It also doesn't have to be a big waste of time. The key to successful negotiation is knowing exactly what to do once you get into the dealership. You should not allow yourself to be swayed by the car salesman who is trying to sell the car at the dealership price. You should have a plan before ever walking in and you should be prepared to stick to the plan no matter what.

Keyless Chuck

We will be going over several successful car price negotiation strategies. If you can master these techniques, you'll have no problems getting a car at a price you want.

Technique #1: Know the Value of the Car

Car salesmen will often try to talk customers into buying a car for more than it is actually worth. This usually works because the customers haven't taken the time to look up the car in question on something called Kelley Blue Book. The Blue Book tells the value of any particular model based on mileage and features. It's an unbiased, free way of seeing exactly what a car is worth. It also allows you to "correct" the salesman if he or she is trying to sell you a car for more than what it is worth in KBB.

Technique #2: Ask Them If They Can Do Better

The car salesman states that he can give you the car for ,000. This is more than you are willing to pay. A simple way to get him to lower the price is to ask "is that the best price you can give me? That really is more than I am willing to pay." It seems like an obvious question, but it's something people usually don't think to ask and it can be quite effective.

Technique #3: Threaten

No, we don't mean that you should threaten the salesman with violence. Instead, you should inform them that you've seen a similar vehicle at another dealership for x dollars less than the car at this dealership, and that if they aren't willing to lower the price, you'll take your business elsewhere. Since sales is such a competitive field, many salesmen will lower the price if they know it means a sure sale for them.

Technique #4: Meet in the Middle

Let's say you're negotiating over a ,000 car. You want the car for ,000. The salesman says he can't sell it for that low. You now have two options: walk away or compromise. Tell him that you're willing to split the difference and pay ,500 for the car. In most cases, he'll take the offer because he knows you won't go higher and he won't go lower.

Technique #5: Don't Budge

Salesmen are trained to do one thing: to sell the product. They'll do anything to sell the car, even if it means intimidating a customer. Do not allow yourself to be intimidated by a pushy salesman. If he's trying to persuade you to do something you don't want to do, such as buy a car for more money than you're willing to spend, tell him that you will not budge. If he keeps trying to get you to budge, just leave and take your business elsewhere.

Technique #6: Leave

If the salesman will absolutely not budge, thank them for their time and tell them you're not willing to pay their price for the vehicle. Then get up and walk away. This creates a sense of urgency for the salesman. He'll then usually get up right away and may block you from leaving. He'll also try his hardest to cut a deal with you--perhaps at the price you desire.

DeWalt DC759KA Review - What You Need to Know Before You Buy the DeWalt DC759KA

Having a durable, compact drill with a high amount of power can come in handy in many different situations. The DeWalt DC759KA fits all of these criteria and is a great drill. Compact drills are wonderful for fitting into tight spaces and minimizing the fatigue on your arms and this DeWalt model definitely delivers.

Keyless Chuck

Coming equipped with a dual-speed range motor that operates at 0-450 RPM and 0-1500 RPM, the DeWalt DC759KA cordless drill is perfect for heavy-duty projects as well as lighter projects alike. The 1/2 inch keyless ratcheting chuck is also a great feature because it prevents your drill bits from spinning while the drill is under heavy use.

Keyless Chuck

Weighing only 5.2 pounds, you can be sure that your arm won't fatigue too quickly while you're working on your projects. Aside from being lightweight, this drill has a good grip, is well-balanced, and feels quite comfortable in your hands.

Battery life is a big concern for any drill owner and this cordless drill provides a pretty good battery life and they charge fairly quickly as well. Several people have said that the battery life on this drill could be a little better, but others have said it's nearly perfect. Either way, this drill comes with 2 batteries so that even if one dies, you'll always have another one ready to go.

All things considered, I would give the DeWalt DC759KA a very good rating. It provides plenty of power, is comfortable to hold, fits into compact spaces, and most importantly, helps you get the job done.

Panasonic Cordless Drill Reviews - What Makes These Drills So Special?

When you are searching for Panasonic cordless drill reviews, there are many different models of drills, impact drivers or combinations and sizes to consider in the Panasonic line of cordless drills. No matter what size, the Panasonic name is easily recognized, making a variety of products that offer reliable, mid-priced quality. If you are looking for particular Panasonic drills, there are many on the Internet and it is one of the higher rated lines of cordless drills. There are a few details that are predominately true about all of the models in the variety of drills and impact drivers, however.

Keyless Chuck

Pros

Keyless Chuck

There are some common characteristics that exist between the models, such as quicker and more reliable battery re-charges that occur in 55 minutes, instead of the hour that other models require, which allow more productive time on the jobsite. The keyless chuck feature is another common detail, which means it is easier to switch bits without worrying about a lost chuck key. A more thoughtful, ergonomic design and construction for ease of use means that there is less fatigue, which also boosts productivity.

The individual models run in a variety of sizes from the smaller pocket size 3.6 volt Panasonic EY6225CQ cordless drill and driver to the larger 15.6 volt Panasonic EY6535GQW NiMH cordless multi-drill/driver or the Panasonic EY7960LN2S 21.6 volt Li-ion Hammer drill/driver, meaning there is a range of choices and price ranges for every type of usage. You can switch modes from drill to driver, you get 50 percent more run time per charge on the Ni-MH battery design and electronic braking, 18-stage clutch, and revolutionary dual-mode switching gear on the multi-drill/driver combos offering the latest in convenience.

Cons

There isn't much bad to be said for these mid-range drills, but on the multi-drill driver Panasonic EY6535GQW, it has been said that the drill is a little slow, when working on heavy metal drilling, but the driver gets better reviews. On the Panasonic EY7960LN2S 21.6 volt Li-ion Hammer Drill/Driver, Panasonic drill reviews include that is a great drill that features power, stamina and speed, but it is a bit heavy in weight for a cordless and has a slight wobble. Of course, there are many weight complaints about a variety of cordless drills that are in the 18 volt and over class because of the heavier batteries in all brands.

There are so many different models of Panasonic drills that you really need to read about the specific models and size you are interested in, but in researching a range of the Panasonic products, they offer some features that are better than features you might find on some product lines that may cost more.

Overall, the Panasonic cordless drill reviews are positive, with a few minor negative comments on certain models, but they are more by the design and size of these types of drills and not the Panasonic cordless drills in particular. When comparing the various models of cordless drills, these drills look like a reliable choice, no matter which model you select.
